2015 Fall Gardening Workshops

2015 Fall Course Brochure 

Seed Saving Workshop --REGISTRATION CLOSED
Tuesday, September 8th, 6 p.m.

Seeds are the most important food on earth.  Saving seeds is an easy way to ensure a cost effective future for foods that you enjoy growing.  Join Master Gardeners Gail Kovac and Sandy Copeland in the Heritage Vegetable Garden at Cutler Botanic Gardens and learn how to gather and preserve many different varieties of seed.  Demonstrations of useful techniques, hands-on activities, seed collection materials and information sheets will be provided.

Pre-registration is required. Class size is limited to 15 people.  The cost is $8.00/per person.

Vegetable Garden to Table Workshop – Fall Vegetables
Wednesday, October 7th, 6 p.m.
Broome County Cooperative Extension Auditorium

Learn about the culture and use of some popular and not so popular late season vegetables.  Tastings and recipes included.

Pre-registration is required. Class size is limited to 12 people.  The cost is $10.00/per person.   

Compost Indoors with Worms - REGISTRATION CLOSED
Wednesday, October 14th, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Cornell Cooperative Extension Auditorium
Cost: free

Learn how to compost indoors with a worm bin.  We’ll cover worm biology, bin maintenance, and how to harvest finished compost. Each participating household will receive a worm bin made from a plastic tote bin, complete with bedding and some starter worms.  Instructor for this workshop is Kevin Mathers, Resource Educator. There is no charge for the workshop, but space is limited, and registration is required. 

Home Composting Workshop
Wednesday, October 28th, 6:30- 8:00 p.m.
Cornell Cooperative Extension Auditorium
Cost: free

This demonstration style workshop will help you learn the basic steps for successful home composting.  We’ll explore the pros and cons of various composting methods and bin designs, and learn how to how to use compost to improve gardens.  The workshop will be held rain or shine.  Instructor for this workshop will be Kevin Mathers, Resource Educator.  There is no charge for the workshop, but please call (607) 584- 9966 to let us know you are attending.

4-H Youth Activity “Celebrating Evergreens”

Saturday, December 5th, 10 a.m. to Noon

Evergreens have been used to decorate our homes through the winter months for centuries. Join 4-H groups in learning about the different types of evergreen trees and create some fun and simple crafts with evergreen boughs and pine cones.  Make a fresh evergreen kissing ball, and 2 pine cone crafts.  Crafts are suitable for ages 5 and up with adult accompaniment. Cost of program is $10 per family to cover cost of materials.  Pre-registration is required. Registration deadline is December 4th. Cutler Botanic Gardens Wreath Sale
Pre-ordering to begin October 13th.

Order beautiful holiday wreaths or swags and benefit the work of Cutler Botanic Garden.  Freshly made by Broome County Master Gardeners, wreaths are available in 2 sizes; large (28” diameter) or small (22” diameter).  Swags are made to hang either vertically or horizontally.  Bows are included on all.

Pre-paid orders will be accepted from October 13th through November 13th.  Wreaths and swags will be available for pick-up on Saturday, November 28th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension, Outdoor Classroom Building, 840 Upper Front Street, Binghamton, NY 13905.
